Beeches win Bronze at ASA Awards

A host of talented swimmers, volunteers and aquatic professional were recognised at the ASA inaugural awards in a ceremony which took place on the 18th October in birmingham.

Split into eighteen categories, the Awards celebrated the commitment and achievement of those involved in aquatics. The Awards for the first time saw the Aquaforce Awards (annual volunteer awards) and the Swimtastic Awards join forces to make one event full of celebration, recognition and achievement.

The awards were presented by GBR Women’s Water Polo captain Rosie Morris. She said: “I’m honoured to have been asked to present these awards. The achievement and dedication of all the finalists is amazing and I am very pleased to have been part of this very special event.”

Jon Glenn, ASA Head of Learn to Swim added: “The ASA Awards is an opportunity for us to celebrate the many successes of the community – from people making great achievements in the pool and volunteering at our events or at their local club, to our facility operators who develop the right programmes to get the nation swimming. We have some truly inspirational stories and I would like to thank everyone for their ongoing commitment and dedication to swimming and aquatics.”

Skills Funding now available for Lifeguard Training

Potential lifeguards across the UK are now able to apply for financial support to fund their National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ) thanks to the announcement of approved funding from the Skills Funding Agency.

 

The funding, which is available until July 2015, provides a major impetus for those thinking about a career in lifesaving or the wider leisure industry. Applications are now open for approved training centres (ATCs) who are registered with the Skills Funding Agency, with funding available to those aged 16 to 18-years-old and for those who are currently unemployed and meet certain eligibility criteria.

Administered by IQL UK, the trading subsidiary of the Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS UK), the NPLQ is the most awarded lifeguard qualification in the UK.   Through IQL UK, the UK’s largest awarding body for qualifications of this type, over 44,000 NPLQ’s are awarded annually.

Skills-funding

The NPLQ, which is the prerequisite for lifeguarding jobs, provides candidates with key life skills which can be used both in and away from the pool-side. The course covers the fundamentals of first aid including CPR as well as developing leadership and responsibility, essential for future career progression.

 

Tara Dillon, Executive Director of IQL UK said: “Becoming a lifeguard not only provides a great base wage, it also provides a great stepping stone for a career in the leisure industry, with many management staff starting their careers with an NPLQ qualification.”

 

For St. Vincent Sixth Form College in Gosport, Hampshire the availability of funding for students has been welcomed by college tutor and National Training Assessor, Eddie Seaborne MBE.

 

He said: “The awarding of skills funding will have a tremendous impact for our sports and PE students who can now access the NPLQ qualification, a fantastic asset to any aspiring leisure professional. We hosted one of the first pilot courses at the college in 2013, which was very successful and all candidates have managed to secure employment as lifeguards.

 

“The availability of the funding means I can host another NPLQ course over the next few months and I intend to open this up to a wider audience, such as those currently seeking employment at Gosport’s job centre.”

 

Tara Dillon, Executive Director of IQL UK added: “The announcement of available funding for the NPLQ is fantastic news and we are excited to equip a new batch of lifeguards with the skills that save lives and ensure the safety of the public.”

This Months Swimming Times out Now!

  • Four former British servicemen have become the first team of amputees to complete an English Channel relay swim. The quartet of Stephen White, Jamie Gillespie, Conrad Thorpe and Craig Howorth – all one-leg amputees – completed the 21-mile crossing in 12hr 14min. In doing so, they raised almost £3,300 for Blesma, the British Limbless Ex-Service Men’s Association, which helps other injured service personnel living with limb loss.
  • Scores of disabled young people turned out to sample the London Aquatics Centre’s world class facilities during National Paralympic Day – and some could go on to be the Paralympic stars of the future. One youngster has already been identified as someone who should be fast-tracked on to the ASA’s disability talent programme. Others are being advised on clubs they may wish to join and how to move forward in the sport. Twenty disabled young people took part in a fun-filled Sports Fest Talent ID session – just one of three strands of activity during the day-long event at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
  • Lois Toulson split the Chinese divers to top a three-medal haul for Great Britain at the World Junior Diving Championships in Penza, Russia. Just two weeks before her 15th birthday, the City of Leeds diver moved from seventh to second with her final dive, which scored 73 points for a total of 352.90 in the B group platform. She pipped the second Chinese to the bronze by 1.85. Song Anxin of China took the gold with 394.10. In the same session, James Heatly and Sam Thornton won bronze in the boys’ A and B 3m synchro, despite an ankle injury sustained by Thornton just before the competition. They scored 305.88, missing silver by 1.92 points.
