Learn to Swim Update June 2017

Please see below the letter that was given out at this year’s AGM:

Tuesday 27th June 2017

Dear Member

We found out some months ago that Serco, who now operate both Beeches and Erdington pools, did not want us to continue with the ‘learn to swim’ part of our club at their pools.

We have a deadline of September 1st 2017, by which time we may only provide from stage 6 onwards (you may have seen the recent Boldmere SC press release in the Sutton Observer). The swimmers affected are the ones in the Big Pool.

We as a committee have been working hard to try to continue with our own learn to swim program but at different pools. The club has invested heavily in our successful Learn to Swim program and wish to continue to teach using our own qualified teachers.

By the 1st September we will be starting a new phase in the clubs’ history – with Learn to Swim programs running at Joseph Leckie School (Walstead Road West, Walsall, WS5 4PG), Pheasey Park Farm School (Wimperis Way, Great Barr,B43 7DH) and Handsworth Leisure Centre (Holly Rd, Birmingham B20 2BY). The new classes at Joseph Leckie (which is a short 10 minute drive down the A34) will be 40 minutes long, and run on a Sunday morning. The new classes at Pheasey Park (approx 5 minutes from Beeches Pool) will be on a Monday and Tuesday evening.

The Babes will still operate on a Sunday afternoon, but will be at the new venue of Handsworth Swimming Baths.

The only changes to the lengths lessons (Big Pool) will be on a Sunday, where all sessions will move to Handsworth – starting one hour later than the current times. Also the Seniors and Masters on a Saturday morning will be moving to Handsworth, with a slightly earlier start time of 7am – but they will have the proper anti wave lane ropes! All other lengths lessons will remain at the same times and places.

The only other change will be when the new Erdington pool (Orphange Road, Erdington) opens in September, the Juniors, Seniors and Masters will have a session on Friday night, starting at 7.30pm, at the new Erdington pool.

We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause, but we are hoping that you will still support us going forwards.

The Learn to Swim children will be assessed in July, and will then be in the stage/group that they will move with in September. We will send this out in writing to all parents to make sure that it is received.

Any queries please let us know.

Kind Regards – and many thanks for your continued support.

Mercian League Round 2 2017

It was a night of mixed emotions and maiden swims for the Beeches few who made the journey to Oak Park on Saturday, for round 2 of this year’s Mercian League.

Just three  first places on the night – which went to Sophia Deans (12/under 100 Breast and 100 Free) and the 10/under Freestyle relay (Kianna Hughes, Carys Higgins, Kadijha Cox and Said Ashman) – but a massive amount of Team spirit around poolside – it was an interesting night!

Other top three finishers were – Vicky Cox (14/under 100 Backstroke); Carys Higgins (10/under 50 Freestyle); Ellison Hart (12/under 100 Backstroke); Jess Jones (Open 100 Backstroke); Kadijha Cox (10/under 50 Breaststroke).

Other memorable moments were the ‘first swims’ for the club – Ethan Barker, who swam the 100 Breaststroke, and Aimee Hindley, who swam the 100 Freestyle.

Well done to all the swimmers on the night. Lets hope round 3  is a good one 🙂

Congrats to Ross and Stuart – Jubilee River Swim 2017

Congratulations to Ross Emery and Stuart Fuller who both completed the Jubilee River Swim yesterday. They finished 14th (2 hours 45 minutes 22.1 seconds) and 13th (2 hours 45 minutes 21.5 seconds) respectively in the ‘Skins’ category.

The swim:

The Jubilee River is man-made flood relief channel opened in 2002, and as well as diverting water from the Thames at times of high water levels, it has long since blossomed into a wonderful habitat for wildlife and has become incredibly popular for recreational use with it’s adjacent footpaths and cycle track.

In 2012 we received permission from the Environment Agency to become the very first recreational users of it’s water, and the Jubilee River Swim has gone from strength to strength ever since. We swim 10km starting from the footbridge near Mill Lane in Taplow at its western end, to the Pococks Lane road bridge a few hundred metres short of the river re-joining the Thames near Eton.

The three weirs along the rivers length mark hand over points for the relay swimmers, also the location for the feed stations. There’ll be a feed station at the finish too.

For relay teams the swim legs are as follows:-

Leg One – Start to Marsh Lane Weir – 1.9km

Leg Two – Marsh Lane Weir to Manor Farm Weir 3.5km

Leg Three – Manor Farm Weir to Slough Weir – 2.6km

Leg Four – Slough Weir to Finish – 1.5km
